My name is Aleksandar Hemon, but everyone calls me Sasha. I was born in Sarajevo in 1964, a mixed result of a "mixed" marriage. I had a happy childhood, a tumultuous adolescence and a confusing, promiscuous youth-who could ask for more! I discovered my literary proclivities fairly early: at the age of 13 I began an epic novel that was to attack the eternal question of pubescent alienation. I wrote one chapter (half a page long) before I abandoned the project, and moved on to playing soccer as much as possible. In my early twenties, I wrote a thousand poems, which was exceptional only because not a single one of them was readable. In fact, my first story was a failed poem -- I transformed verses into sentences and a story miraculously appeared.
